Pupil Premium

    What Is Pupil Premium?

Publicly-funded schools in England get extra funding from the government to help them improve the attainment of their disadvantaged pupils. Evidence shows that children from disadvantaged backgrounds generally face extra challenges in reaching their potential at school and often do not perform as well as their peers. The pupil premium grant is designed to allow schools to help disadvantaged pupils by improving their holistic progress and the academic results they achieve.

Schools get pupil premium funding based on the number of eligible pupils they have from the following groups.

    • children registered for a free school meal at any point in the last 6 years
    • children that are in or previously have been looked-after or adopted
    • children whose parents are currently serving in the armed forces

Schools can also spend their pupil premium on pupils who do not meet the eligibility criteria but need extra support. This could be for example:

    • Children who are in contact with a social worker
    • Children who used to be in contact with a social worker
    • Children who are acting as a carer

What are we spending our Pupil Premium on this year?

School leaders are best-placed to assess their pupils’ needs and use funding to improve attainment. It is up to school leaders to decide how to spend the pupil premium. This is planned, monitored and reviewed using a tiered approach of teaching, academic support and wider approaches.
